Test ink according to DIN 53126

Test inks according to DIN 53126 are produced in our company and their physical properties are measured according to DIN EN 14370, DIN 19268 and DIN 51562.

"Testing of paper and board - Determination of writability with ink" is the beginning of DIN 53126. This standard specifies a test method to determine whether paper or board is writable with water-based ink according to the specifications of the DIN 53126 standard.

In this standard, ink writability is defined as the resistance of paper, board or cardboard to ink leakage, beading and bleed-through. In order to carry out the test procedure according to DIN 53126, not only is the test procedure prescribed, but the ink to be used is also precisely defined. Only an ink formulation that is uniform for all tests can provide comparable test results.

Note: DIN 53126 was renewed by the German Institute for Standardisation in April 2011. Since then, a higher PH value has applied to the DIN 53126 test inks. If you work with test inks in your company, it is important for you to know when reordering whether ink from the new or the old DIN 53126 from 2001 was used for your tests and inspections. A change of the test ink to the new DIN brings changes in the test results, which must be taken into account when evaluating the test results.

Test ink according to ASTM F3039

This test ink complies with the current ASTM F3039 standard for testing packaging for medical devices to be sterilised in the final packaging.

The ASTM F3039 standard applies to non-porous sealing materials (film-film pouches made of PE, PET, PVA, PVOH, PVC). When using partially porous sealing materials (paper-film pouches), the test ink according to DIN EN ISO 11607-1, Annex B (in the American ASTM F1929) is required.

Test ink according to DIN EN ISO 11607-1, Annex B (ASTM F1929)

This blue test ink complies with the current DIN EN ISO 11607-1, Annex B (in American ASTM F1929) for tests of packaging for medical devices to be sterilised in the final packaging.

DIN EN ISO 11607-1:2017: "Packaging for medical devices to be sterilised in the final packaging - Part 1: Requirements for materials, sterile barrier systems and packaging systems".
The standard specifies a test method to determine whether seal welds of medical packaging seal in a sterile manner. Also called seal tightness test. During the functional test of sealed seams of medical packaging, the seam tightness is checked with this ink. If the ink leaks, it can be assumed that the medical device is not aseptically or sterilely packaged and the packaging process should be adjusted.

Note: This standard applies to partially porous sealing materials (paper-film pouches). When using non-porous film material (film-foil pouches), the test ink according to ASTM F3039 is required.

Test ink according to DIN ISO 8296:2008-03

DIN ISO 8296:2008-03 (draft DIN 53364) regulates a simple method for determining the surface energy with test inks for plastics, films, composites and other surfaces.

Before you can coat, treat, finish, bond, print or paint polymers or metals with a medium, precise knowledge of the surface energy is often indispensable.
Production processes can be designed more effectively with our test ink and reject rates can be reduced.
Especially in running production processes, the quick testing of the surface tension of materials or surfaces is often advantageous. In this way, optimisations can be made during coating or treatment in the running process. After the production process, quality tests with test inks according to DIN ISO 8296:2008-03 (in draft DIN 53364) can identify defective individual parts or entire batches.

We have developed a range of test inks that are environmentally friendly because a water / ethanol mixture is used. The entire range comprises 22 test inks with different surface tensions. The range includes surface tensions from 30 to 72 mN/m in steps of two (i.e. 30, 32, 34, ..., 68, 70, 72) with a tolerance of +/- 0.6 mN/m. All test inks are supplied in brown 30ml glass dropper bottles with a brush cap.

The test procedure according to DIN ISO 8296:2008-03 (in draft DIN 53364)
The surface must be smooth or horizontally flat. To determine the surface energy, a series of our test inks is spread on the surface with gradually increasing surface tension. For this purpose, an area of approx. 6 cm² is quickly applied with a brush. This is done until a test ink is found that just barely wets the surface for 2 seconds. The applied ink must remain on the surface as a film of liquid for at least two seconds without forming drops. If the test liquid remains flat for longer than two seconds, carry out another test with a test ink with a higher surface tension. For the reverse effect, use a liquid with lower surface tension for the next test.
